Emerge represents the emergence of art, specifically hand-made art, in the Origins series. For much of our existence, tools and art were made by hand. The first tool makers were sculptors that used stones to turn other stones into tools. Through the mechanical and now digital ages, it is easy to forget that all art, and tools, begin by hand.

This piece also harkens back to sculptures of the classical period. The subject of an outstretched hand is a classical image (e.g. Sistine Chapel ceiling) and marble, white marble, is the medium of classical sculpture.

Emerge is designed to show the progression of a sculpture as it develops from a block of marble. Every four inches, an increasing level of detail is revealed such that it appears as if the sculpture is emerging from the stone. The challenges in this piece were to capture the tension that can be expressed in a life-like hand and the detail of my fingerprint in the index finger.
