AUG (start) is a double helix representing the start codon for genetic sequencing. DNA, and the amino acids for which it codes, is the fundamental building block for all life. Every organism is bound by the fact that its coding can be traced through its DNA, and every sequence coding for a specific trait begins with these same three nucleotides.
In this piece, the wood segments represent the AUG nucleotides on one side, and corresponding TAC nucleotides on the other. The marble helix is the remainder of the genetic sequence.
The challenge to this piece was to create an abstract piece that also represented the complexity of the DNA double helix. Additionally, I wanted to continue the progression of the helix through the use of five different wood types, and attach these to the marble structure to form the stem of the helix.
